Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease in the elderly and a leading cause of disability. As the average age of the general population increases, the incidence of knee osteoarthritis is increasing. Age, weight, and repetitive motion, especially impact on the joint from squatting or kneeling, are common risk factors for knee OA. Several factors such as cytokines, leptin and mechanical forces are the pathogenesis of knee OA. Patients with knee pain should carefully evaluate whether the cause of their pain is knee OA. Some forms of knee arthrosis are asymptomatic, and in many patients, knee arthrosis cannot be identified due to the low sensitivity of radiographic examinations. This review provides data on prevalence, etiology, and risk factors.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common debilitating diseases, especially in the elderly. Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease in developed countries and is the leading cause of chronic disability, mainly as a result of osteoarthritis of the knee and osteoarthritis of the hip. Families who have had to adapt their lives and homes to this disease and families who have done so due to reduced productivity at work.
Patients with OA have an increased risk of death with an OR of 1.54 compared to the general population. History of diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and walking disorders are the main risk factors. Excess mortality is observed in all diseases with specific causes of death, but is particularly evident in cardiovascular complications. Importantly, knee osteoarthritis not only has a higher prevalence than other types of arthritis, but also occurs in a younger age group, especially in obese women. The incidence of knee arthritis increases with age and increases with the increase in life expectancy and the increase in the average weight of the population.
Pain and other symptoms of OA can have a significant impact on quality of life and affect physical function and psychological parameters. Knee arthritis is not a local disease that affects only the cartilage, but a chronic disease that affects the entire joint, including the joints.
