African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are iconic and endangered species facing numerous threats including habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Conservation efforts demand accurate monitoring and management strategies, which traditional methods struggle to provide efficiently and non-invasively. In recent years, facial recognition technology has emerged as a promising tool for wildlife conservation, particularly for the identification and monitoring of individual elephants. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the application of facial recognition technology in African elephant conservation, exploring its methodologies, benefits, challenges, and future prospects.
