Abstract
Ownership and usage of mobile devices in online content access amongst today’s university students is rapidly growing. Majority of universities’ students nowadays are considering Mobile devices as alternative solutions to solve computers’ shortages in public universities when accessing online content. Limited computer laboratories, insufficient internet bandwidths, lack of modern desktops computers that meet today’s student’s demands, lack of modern libraries, power black outs, lack of standby power generators and lack of skilled manpower are some of the problems facing today’s Kenyan public university students. The study used descriptive survey methodology. Before commencement of data collection, the researcher obtained a research permit from the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation board (NACOSTI). After obtaining research permit, a sample population of 482 respondents from the six faculties was obtained using simple random sampling technique. The purpose of the study was explained to those sampled and explanation of respondent’s data safety was explained to those involved in the study. The process of data collection began by ensuring that all respondents voluntarily participated in study. data were collected using online questionnaires which were designed using google docs and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics v22 x64 data analysis software. The study found that the majority of students owned and used their mobile devices when accessing online educational content. Basing the finding results on how often a student accessed online educational content using a device, university desktop computers reported 18% usage level, own laptop reported 17% and mobile devices reported 65% usage level. Out of 404 students studied, 91.1% used smartphones, 4.2% tablets, 2.7% iPhones and 0.2% IPad to access educational content online. We conclude that the usage of mobile devices among universities’ students is a popular practice which could be due to their mobility nature and affordability.
