Epar Ganga Oar Ganga: A Tale of a Woman and the pangs of Partition
Abstract
Jyotirmoyi Devi, in her novel, Epar Ganga Oar Ganga, tells the story of story of Sutara, a victim of partition. Women were the worst victims of partition because, not only they lost their homes and sometimes families, but also suffered in their bodies. Women were easy targets of rioters: they were raped, mutilated and murdered. In this story, Sutara, the protagonist, is a young girl from Noakhali, who becomes estranged from her family and narrowly escapes bodily harm by finding shelter in a Muslim home. But her stay with the Muslim family makes her an outcaste among her ‘own’ people. It becomes a stigma that she has to carry the rest of her life. Even when she finds a respectable job, she is humiliated and avoided by her own relatives. She undertakes a journey of self exploration, contemplating on the fates of women in the Mahabharata and of all women in general. The novel, therefore, reflects on the status and conditions of women in society , their suffering and their sacrifice, during the turbulent times of partition and during times of normalcy.
