Abstract
Introduction
Nursing is a profession that requires character and soft skills because nursing as a professional discipline has special domain knowledge and skills as well as attitudes or behaviours obtained through academic education and clinical practice experience. These knowledge, skills and attitudes or behaviours are used in service, so this is what distinguishes nurses as professional disciplines, not just academics (professional character). Understanding what non-technical skills are and their relevance for healthcare practitioners has become a new area of consideration.
Nursing education has transformed over time. While this is particularly evident in the integration of technology in pedagogy, it is not evident whether the training of soft (service) skills has also evolved effectively. Though soft (service) skills are much less tangible than technology, they are perennially relevant and important for nursing care which is essentially people-oriented.
Objectives
• To determine the level of knowledge regarding usage of soft skills among staff Nurses
• To find the association between knowledge scores on soft skills among staff Nurses with selected demographic variables.
Materials and methods
A descriptive study was conducted among staff Nurses of selected hospital, Meerut. Non-probability convenient techniques were used in the study to select the sample.40 samples were taken. Structured knowledge questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge of staff Nurses regarding the usage of soft skills.
Results- Out of 40 staff Nurses 17.5% had inadequate knowledge & 47.5% had moderate knowledge and 35% had adequate knowledge on soft skills Also In this study the finding revealed significant relationship of soft skills with previous education level and years of experience Non significant association was found with age, gender and training attended by staff Nurses.
Conclusion
Soft skills involve adaptability, flexibility, problem solving, critical thinking and professionalism. Patients want compassionate, competent care and Nurses mandatorily need to apply any kind of soft skill that promotes an honest, considerate and effective relations. Soft skills, in essence, are the interpersonal aptitudes and qualities that allow to interact and thrive in your relationships with patients and co-workers. These attributes are essential in establishing a good rapport with patients and the nurses must develop these competencies to build a health and professional relationship.
