| Abstract: | Cyclones brought great damage and destruction to the society and economy of the coastal region of Midnapore district during the nineteenth century. Wind circulation and solar radiation above the Bay of Bengal had acted as the main catalyst for the creation of cyclonic storms. Fishing is the source of survival for the people residing in the coastal region, but their life has sudden ups and downs due to climatic changes. Encounter of coastal cyclones is the prominent issue among issues faced by the fishermen. This paper summarizes about the coastal cyclone, its structure and its trend in comprehensive manner. It also focuses on summarizing the problems faced by fishermen and extensive impact on the livelihood of the fishermen. Chronological study encompassing tropical cyclones and the problems faced by the fishers during the cyclone was made to find the impact of the coastal cyclone on the fishermen’s livelihood. The study reveals the list of issues faced by not only the fishermen and their dependents also. Coastal cyclones almost ruin their lives and made them either live in a hell-like place even without proper drinking water and sanitation or migrate. Authorities are suggested to take steps regarding the generation of additional sources of income, arranging cooperative societies for financial supporting and having insurance for their boats. So that at least they can revive them from the mess. This paper is concluded by offering some suggestions to improve the yield and productivity of fishermen engaged in water bodies. |
