Video display terminal (VDT), Tear break up time (TBUT), Contact lens (CL).
Purpose: The goal of this study was to compare the dryness symptoms in contact lens, spectacle wearers and emmetropes using video display terminals. Secondly, the study was to implement 20-20-20 rule to relieve dryness.
Methods: An experiential intervention study was conducted among 90 participants (male-42, females-48) aged 27.3±3.3 years. This study was conducted for period of 6 months and subjects were educated on how to reduce dry eye symptoms using 20-20-20 rule. Each participant was questioned to understand more about their work environment and to find out if they were suffering any symptoms of dry eye. Three visits were made by participants on day1, day32 and day62. Subjects wearing Contact lenses, spectacles and emmetropes, while working on computer for 5-7hrs/day were evaluated for tear film stability using TBUT test.
Results: A statistical significance of P<0.0001 was seen when TBUT of day 1, 32 and 62 were compared using Friedman test. Kruskal Wallis Test was done for seeing the difference within the groups on second visit (day 32-1), third visit (day 62-1) and was found to be statistically significant for a user with CL, spectacles and emmetropes with a P value of 0.01.
Conclusion: According to our study the 20-20-20 rule educational intervention leads to substantial improvement in tear film and improved participants’ quality of life. The participants required approximately 3-4 weeks to implement this rule in their daily lives.
