Paper Title:
Analyzing The Experiences Of The Hindu Students In Terms Of Culture Shock And Communication Barriers In The Esteemed University Of Jamia Millia Islamia
India is a country with a highly diverse culture. Hindus, as is common knowledge, comprise the majority in this country. According to the 2011 census, Hindus made up a majority of 80.21%, while Muslims made up a minority of 12.78% in Delhi. It comes as no shock that religious conflicts between the two are prevalent, and many times, Muslims, being the minority, suffer. According to previous research, at the university level, students prefer to opt for religious-based institutions, predominantly the minority. Therefore, we can say that the experience of the minority, on average, is not very pleasant because they experience social exclusion, stereotypes, and identity-based peer group formations. However, previous research has also shown that there is an improvement when it comes to higher studies in achieving social diversity. But what if the majority of Hindus in an institution becomes the minority? How will their experience appear to be? This research paper deals with the question of Majority-Minority in the esteemed university of Jamia Millia Islamia, where the Muslim population is approximately 63% while the Hindu population constitutes only 34.32%. It uses a mixed method approach with a survey-based questionnaire followed by a qualitative study using a case study to understand the experiences of the Hindus who make the majority in the country, in an institution where they make the minority. It focuses on the experiences of these students and the culture shock they may have experienced, considering that they lived among people who shared their beliefs and values. It also questions if there was a communication barrier between the Muslim and Hindu students.
