Social media are new media that have molded how people reflect on issues, deliberate, express themselves on how the modern society functions. They are media that facilitate persons of different origins and locations to exchange thoughts, link up with people. They are effective communication tools that drive advocacy, mobilize support for or against a cause, and where people source for counsel, news, guidance and information. Social media have also been abused in a number of ways by consumers and users in creating panic, fright, disturbance of civic peace and disseminating falsehood, entrenching deceptive and unsubstantiated propaganda amongst individuals in the society. The peaceful co-existence amongst different ethnic groups of Nigeria at one time or the other have been threatened and made vulnerable because of misuse of social media by the citizenry. The paper, therefore, attempts to examine different means social media communication can be used to deepen national integration. In addressing the challenges of national integration and harmony among heterogeneous groups in Nigeria, and for active input on issues of collective interest by the citizens, social media can be used as a tools for social bonding among Nigerians when confronted with disputes which threaten the peace and security of lives and property of the citizenry and to forestall national disintegration. This paper suggests that social media should be employed in realizing socio-political, cultural, economic and religious integration, and, therefore, proposes that government should be serious in punishing offenders of hate speech at all levels and impose reasonable monetary fines on fake news propagandists to avoid national disaffection.
