The article discusses the increasing prevalence of sleep apnea (SA) worldwide and the challenges associated with reliable diagnosis using expensive and intrusive methods like polysomnography. The proposed solution introduces a comfortable home-based diagnostic method utilizing an infrared (IR) camera. Patients wear a mask enabling easy tracking of breathing, and the IR camera detects temperature changes on the mask surface, converting them into breathing waveforms. The diagnostic program calculates breathing cycles, defines states and events for state transitions, and diagnoses SA based on apnea duration and occurrence during sleep. Real-time transmission of information allows remote analysis by healthcare professionals. The device's efficacy is demonstrated through observations under various conditions. In another context, a device is presented to improve blood oxygenation in patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The device applies continuous negative abdominal pressure (CNAP) to assist in opening the lower lung and improve gas exchange. A prototype showed promising results in a pig trial and was deemed comfortable and easy to apply in preliminary human testing. Future prototypes will focus on enhancing ease of application, rigidity, and adjustability. Introducing a biometric authentication scheme for implantable medical devices
(IMDs) to ensure secure access during emergency situations. The scheme combines electrocardiogram instantaneous readings with fingerprint reading, allowing legitimate users, such as emergency medical teams, access to IMDs. The scheme incorporates elliptic curve cryptography to safeguard wireless key exchanges, preventing unauthorized access even in emergency scenarios. The proposed scheme undergoes thorough security and privacy analyses, addressing hardware/software limitations of implantable medical devices for a safe and valid authentication process.
