Abstract

A new world order was announced by the victor of the Cold War, the US in the early 1990s in what was to be a major shift from the bipolar world marked by proxy conflicts and ideological clashes. The UN which was to act as a vanguard of peaceful resolution of disputes failed to prevent the beginnings of wars most of which were mediated by individual nation states. Lauded for its preference of peaceful means over use of force the organisation has since been unable to do anything more than just pass on stern words to the warring parties and issue condemnation because the Big Five virtually control all decision making and have their own geopolitical influence to maintain. There is rarely ever a unanimous approval by the Big Five over the most crucial decisions and also the organisation has become ever more rigid to reforms despite years of demand for it. What used to be the UN? What is the UN? What will be the UN? These questions, which will be discussed in detail in this thesis, will define the UN.
