| Abstract: | This research paper provides a comprehensive historical overview of the development of international environmental law, tracing its origins from early civilizations' practices of pollution control and resource management to contemporary global frameworks. Beginning with examples from Mesopotamia and the Roman Empire, the paper highlights how ancient societies laid the groundwork for environmental regulation. It then examines pivotal moments such as the 1972 Stockholm Conference, which catalyzed international cooperation on environmental protection. The paper discusses the proliferation of international environmental agreements, the role of scientific uncertainty in shaping legal frameworks, and the contributions of the private sector in establishing environmental norms. Additionally, it explores the linkage between human rights and the environment, emphasizing the evolving recognition of the right to a healthy environment. Finally, the paper addresses challenges in developing legal frameworks for liability and compensation in international environmental law. Overall, this research underscores the complex interplay between environmental preservation, human rights, sustainable development, and the ongoing efforts to address global environmental challenges through legal mechanisms. |
