Abstract

Despite the fact that it is potentially a valuable resource for sustainable development, human urine produced annually in large amounts is often considered as wasteful. This research investigates its physiochemical properties, application of urine in hydrogen production and social economic implications of the same. Analysis carried out in the laboratory indicated contents held by urine with 1.82% urea being the main component which constituted up to 52%. Urea has such a high concentration that it can be used as an alternative clean fuel for producing hydrogen gas. The setup experiments showed that we could obtain 1.08g of hydrogen from 15litres of urine which was more efficient than gasoline in terms of consumption when used on generators. Thus, extraction involves reaction of aluminum powder with urine resulting into generation of hydrogen at rates between 150–700 ml/min/g Al and attaining 90% yield. This produced hydrogen has an energy capacity equaling to 2200Wh/kg Al, more than any known battery types. Furthermore, this may be improved by using electrochemical cells based on hybrid photovoltaic systems to enhance H2 production from urea electrolysis. These results point out ways through which urinary based mechanisms can be incorporated into energy systems leading better industrial and domestic renewable options.
