Introduction: Tetanus can lead to severe respiratory muscle paralysis and a mortality rate ranging from 40-80%. Agricultural workers, gardeners, soldiers, mothers, and infants are the most vulnerable groups. It is an entirely preventable disease. Globally 38,000 people died from tetanus in 2017. It is prevalent in developing and underdeveloped countries. Therefore, it is crucial to have proper knowledge about tetanus and vaccination for prevention. Conducting this study on health-seeking people's knowledge and attitudes towards tetanus and vaccination is necessary to take further preventive measures.
Methodology: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study on the health-seeking people of Jhikorgaccha Upazila Health Complex, Jashore, Bangladesh in October 2023. The data was collected through face-to-face interviews using a pre-designed, structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using suitable software.
Result: Among 204 participants, 94.63% of the female respondents had heard of tetanus, while 87.27% of the male respondents had also heard of it. The majority 56.86% of the respondents were homemakers, among them 95.68% knew the name of the disease “Tetanus”, 45.68% knew about the source of infection & about 68% knew about the modes of infection of tetanus, 68.10% knew that tetanus toxoid vaccines are received during reproductive age. In this study, 11.27% were agricultural workers, 86.95% had heard about tetanus, 78.26% knew about the vaccine, and 47.82% knew about the source of infection.
Conclusion: In this study, the highest rate of health-seeking individuals were housewives and married women, most of whom knew about the disease "Tetanus." As agricultural workers and women of reproductive age are at a higher risk, this study can help improve their knowledge about Tetanus and its prevention.
