This article investigates the sector-specific impacts of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on the competitiveness of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in non-traditional emerging markets. As SMEs play a vital role in economic development, their engagement in international markets through FDI has become increasingly significant. This review synthesizes empirical studies from 2000 to 2022, focusing on manufacturing, services, agriculture, renewable energy, and information and communication technology (ICT). The findings highlight that while FDI can enhance SME competitiveness by providing access to new markets, technologies, and resources, it also introduces challenges such as increased competition and resource constraints. The review offers insights into how these impacts vary across sectors and emphasizes the need for tailored policies to optimize FDI benefits and mitigate its adverse effects.
