Sohrai art — a vivacious, culturally specific tribal art form, which has its root in the East Indian state of Jharkhand. Traditional practice is deeply ingrained in culture of rural communities in Santhal Pargana, Lathehar, Hazaribagh and Gumla regions and plays an important medium of cultural expression. Art Sohrai is absolutely necessary for the conservation and transmission of tribal tradition from generation to generation, by rural women artists. It is closely related to the Sohrai festival which is a major harvest celebration in the tribal calendar. The Sohrai works most often manifest motifs drawn from nature and from the everyday life of a village on the walls of earthen dwellings using natural pigments. Apart from its aesthetic significance, Sohrai art throws light on the contours of women and art and society in the context of India's tribal groups. Over thirty distinct tribal communities like Santhals, Mundas, Oraons and Hos live in Jharkhand and Sohrai art is an important part of the Jharkhandi cultural mosaic. As more and more is done to preserve and develop this special design art style, people understand the significance it plays in maintaining the culture and the opportunities for economics that tribal artists have.
