தமிழ்நாடு காலம் காலமாய் இசை நாட்டியத்தில் வரலாறு படைத்து வரும் திருநாடு. நமது ஆலயங்களில் இறை வழிபாட்டில் இசையும் நாட்டியமும் மிக முக்கியமான அங்கம் வகித்திருந்தது. இசை வழிபாடில்லாத இறைவழிபாடு உயிரில்லாத உடல் என்று கருதி பண்டைத் தமிழர்கள் ஆடல் பாடல் போன்ற கலைகளை ஆலயங்களில் முறைப்படுத்தி கட்டாயமாக்க வைத்தார்கள். அன்றைய . காலக்கட்டத்தில் ஆலயம் வெறும் வழிபாட்டுத் தல மட்டுமில்லாது. வேதங்கள் உயர்கல்வி ஆகமங்கள், சாத்திரங்கள் போன்ற கல்விகள் பயிலும் கல்விக்கூடமாகவும் இருந்துள்ளது. இவை தவிர இசை, நாட்டியம், சிற்பம், சித்திரம் போன்ற கலைகளும் அங்கு பரம்பரையாக பயிற்றுவிக்கப்பட்டு போற்றிப் பாதுகாக்கப்பட்டு ஆடல் கலையானது வளர்ந்த வண்ணமாக இருக்கிறது என்பதை பற்றி எடுத்துரைப்பதே இக்கட்டுரையின் ஆய்வுச்சுருக்கமாகும்.
