Mucosal drug delivery systems represent a promising approach for achieving targeted and sustained drug release through the body’s mucous membranes. These delivery systems exploit the absorptive properties of the mucosa in areas such as the oral, nasal, vaginal, ocular, and gastrointestinal tracts. This review discusses the various types of mucosal drug delivery systems, their advantages, challenges, and recent advancements in the field. Emphasis is placed on the mechanisms of drug absorption through mucosal surfaces, the role of bioadhesive materials, and the potential of novel technologies like nanoparticles and hydrogels to enhance drug delivery. The article concludes with an exploration of future directions and the potential for mucosal drug delivery systems to transform therapeutic strategies.
