Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) connects devices, often sensor-based, to collect and share data autonomously. In IoT-enabled Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), small sensor nodes gather environmental data and send it to a central hub for analysis. However, these nodes have limited energy resources, making energy-efficient communication critical for network longevity. This review focuses on energy-efficient routing in IoT-WSNs, examining strategies like multi-hop communication, clustering, and machine learning to optimize data flow and conserve energy. It highlights advancements such as quantum-inspired optimization, blockchain for secure routing, and energy harvesting, all aimed at improving efficiency and extending the lifespan of IoT networks for diverse applications. Objective: The purpose of this survey is to examine the state-of-the-art research on energy-conscious routing protocols and algorithms that minimize energy consumption during data transmission, as well as problems and obstacles related to routing and potential future directions for IoT research. The integration of these energy-efficient routing techniques with new IoT technologies, such as edge computing, 5G, and artificial intelligence (AI), is also explored in this review. It looks at how these linkages can improve data processing in real time, make the best use of available resources, and cut down on energy usage even more in large-scale implementations. Conclusion: This paper addresses key challenges such as energy efficiency and network reliability.
