Abstract

Chain link assemblies are widely used in the sugar industry for conveying the material. For material handling conveyors, mostly customized chains are used. The roller chain link plate of these customized chains bears most of the conveyor chains weight. The aim of this paper is to optimize the shape and reduce the weight of the customized non-standard roller chain's outer link plate using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This study specifically focuses on the outer link plate, aiming to decrease the overall weight of the chain link assembly by altering its shape. Both analytical and numerical methods were utilized to optimize the roller chain link plate. Seven different designs of the link plate were evaluated, with the final shape chosen considering the minimum stress and minimum weight. The results indicate weight reduction of 1.2 to 1.4 kg per meter length of chain which is a 9 to 10% reduction. Additionally, experimental validation was conducted to confirm the findings.
