ABSTRACT
Background: Caffeine is used to prevent episodes of apnea in preterm neonates. It increases the rate of breathing in preterm neonates improving their breathing cycle. Study have been conducted to improve the apneic episodes in neonates using caffeine and are found to be effective in improving the condition with improvement in secondary outcomes which include reduction in extubation, retinopathy of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, but no significant change in improving the birth weight of neonates was found.
Methodology: A prospective observational study was conducted on 60 preterm neonates. The patients responses before and after initiation of caffeine therapy were recorded. A follow up was conducted after their first discharge and baseline characteristics were recorded to evaluate the improvement.
Results: It was observed that less apneic episodes were seen in pre-terms after initiation of caffeine therapy, the secondary outcomes that retinopathy of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and patent ductus arteriosus were also reduced, with no significant change in birth weight.
Conclusions: Through this study it can be implied that caffeine reduces the risk of apneic episodes, improves the quality of life of neonates and is found to be effective to improve risk of death in preterm.
