Sacrococcygeal teratomas (SCTs) are rare developmental germ cell tumors (GCTs) of the tailbone (sacrum and coccyx). Is a germ cell tumor that may contain immature or mature tissue including teeth, bone, muscle and fat. The tumors are usually not cancerous but can be life threatening if not treated. Approximately 10-15% of patients have a tumor recurrence which is frequently malignant. It occurs in about 35,000 to 40,000 births. There is a female gender preponderance. They commonly present as external gluteal masses. It is likely that sacrococcygeal teratomas are present at birth (congenital) and most are discovered before birth by routine ultrasound examination in the prenatal stage. Fetal SCTs are diagnosed in utero and they pose obstetric problems. They also present with genitourinary and gastrointestinal symptoms. The cause of teratomas is unknown. Our case study is a day-old female child delivered of her mother through a cesarean section, on delivery a huge firm to touch mass was seen in her gluteal region. This study is aimed at reporting this rare case seen in our environment as well as demonstrating the invaluable use of cross-sectional radiological techniques like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis and management of sacrococcygeal teratomas.
