AIM: Comparing the effects of blood flow restriction therapy and physiotherapy treatment for writer’s cramp in office workers aged 30-50 yrs using writer’s cramp rating scale.
RELEVANCE OF STUDY: Writer’s cramp has led to a very common and a leading problem in office going workers. Thus this study helps us understand and identify the best way to treat a simple type of writer’s cramp. It also provides early intervention to prevent further dystonic type of writer’s cramp.
METHODOLOGY: In this comparative type of study 40 patients with writer’s cramp were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria along with the writer’s cramp rating scale. Subjects were then divided into two groups i.e. group ‘A’ (n=20) and group ‘B’ (n=20). Pre and post evaluation was done considering the WCRS. GROUP A was given BFRT for upper limb for the elbow and wrist flexors. GROUP B was given physiotherapy t/t of stretching for upper limb for elbow, wrist and finger flexors. Treatment was given for 6 weeks with 2-3 sessions per week. After 6 week of intervention evaluation was done for both the groups comparing the pre and post score of WCRS.
RESULT: On intergroup comparison using unpaired t test the BFRT pre and post difference of the WCRS score was 3.9+1.5 and that in group with physiotherapy treatment was 3.8+1.7 with p value of WCRS score <0.0001. These values suggests that BFRT and physiotherapy t/t are equally effective.
CONCLUSION: Both BFRT and physiotherapy treatment are equally effective in treating simple writer’s cramp.
