Abstract
This study examines the demographic, socio-economic, and educational factors that influence Grade 4 learners' academic performance in mathematics in Tarlac City School Division. The findings reveal that sex, parental education, and household income all play significant roles in shaping learners' outcomes. In terms of family background, the education level of parents varied widely, with many learners coming from families where parents had lower educational attainment. Financial constraints were also evident, as a large proportion of households reported lower monthly incomes, which may limit access to essential resources for academic success. Family size was another factor, with most learners coming from medium-sized families, though the number of siblings did not appear to significantly influence their performance. Many learners faced challenges related to the lack of educational resources, such as computers and internet access, which are increasingly important for modern learning. Additionally, learners spent a moderate amount of time on academic activities each day, but a notable portion displayed negative attitudes toward mathematics, which could negatively affect their engagement and performance in the subject. The analysis showed that socio-demographic factors, including parental education and available resources, had a strong correlation with academic performance, explaining a substantial portion of the variation in learners' outcomes. Learners' attitudes toward mathematics were identified as a key predictor of performance, with a positive attitude being strongly associated with better academic achievement. These findings highlight the importance of supporting learners through access to resources, fostering positive attitudes, and addressing socio-economic challenges to improve academic outcomes in mathematics.
