Abstract
The temples and forts in Jammu area are more than just buildings; they are active displays of a vibrant cultural, religious, and architectural history of the Jammu region. Over the past three hundred, or so, years art has been at the service of capturing and conveying the spirit of these sites, then in the gradually fading past. This paper looks specifically at how artistic representations of Jammu’s forts and temples serve to protect and excavate the cultural identity of this area. The discussion of artistic representations focuses on traditional art forms, such as Pahari painting, which are applied to depict the stunning architecture of the Raghunath Temple, Ranbireshwar Temple, and Jammu Fort, among others. This paper explores the symbolism and iconography of both sites of war, sacred temples, and the local traditions referencing socio-political history. As an investigation of historical, and contemporary depictions, the argument is made that the artwork sustains not only a visual identity of Jammu’s cultural landmarks but also makes a case for collective memory, community cohesion, and identity. Furthermore, it underscores the continuing relevance of these arts today, particularly with respect to cultural tourism and the protection of intangible cultural heritage in Jammu. This study explores these issues by emphasizing the importance of art in preserving the living cultural heritage of Jammu and its repercussions for the region’s identity and national identity moving forward.
