Abstract Background: Oral cancer remains a major public health issue in India, particularly in states like Maharashtra where tobacco use is prevalent. Early detection is crucial for improving prognosis and reducing disease burden. Objective: This institution-based retrospective study aimed to assess the prevalence and demographic characteristics of oral cancer cases reported over a two-year period (January 2022 – December 2023) at SMBT Dental College and Hospital, Sangamner, Maharashtra. Materials and Methods: Patient records from the Departments of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Oral Pathology were reviewed. Inclusion criteria included histopathologically confirmed cases of oral cancer within the specified period. Data on age, gender, anatomical site, histopathological type, and risk habits (tobacco, alcohol, etc.) were collected and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods with SPSS. Results: A total of 30 patients met the inclusion criteria. The mean age was 48.6 years (±13.2), with a male predominance (60%). Tobacco chewing was the most common habit (80%), and 77.8% of males also reported alcohol use. The most commonly affected anatomical site was the buccal mucosa (40%), followed by the tongue (23.3%). Only 6.7% of patients reported no identifiable risk habits. Conclusion: The study highlights a strong association between oral cancer and tobacco-related habits, particularly smokeless tobacco, with the buccal mucosa being the most affected site. These findings emphasize the need for targeted public health strategies focusing on early screening, awareness, and habit cessation in rural and semi-urban areas of Maharashtra.
