Abstract
The Gambia cough syrup tragedy exposed a devastating public health failure, resulting in the deaths of over 60 children from acute kidney injury (AKI). Investigations revealed that the contaminated syrups contained diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG), industrial chemicals that are highly toxic when ingested. These adulterated medicines were linked to Maiden Pharmaceuticals, an Indian manufacturer, highlighting critical lapses in regulatory oversight and quality control within the global pharmaceutical supply chain. Clinical findings showed severe kidney damage consistent with previous cases of DEG poisoning, reinforcing concerns about inadequate safety measures. This review examines the origins of the contamination, the health effects of DEG and EG exposure, regulatory shortcomings, and the broader implications for drug safety in low- and middle-income countries. Strengthening international pharmaceutical regulations and enhancing detection mechanisms are crucial to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
