Abstract
Title: Knowledge and Awareness Among Physiotherapy Interns and Postgraduates on Post-Stroke Cognition Background: Cognitive impairment is common after a stroke and affects rehabilitation outcomes and quality of life. Physiotherapists play a key role in managing stroke patients, making their awareness of cognitive issues vital for effective care. This study evaluates the awareness of physiotherapy interns and postgraduates regarding post-stroke cognitive impairments. Objective: To assess the knowledge and awareness of post-stroke cognitive impairments among physiotherapy interns and postgraduates. Methods: A survey was conducted with 80 physiotherapy interns and postgraduates in Bangalore during June 2024. A structured questionnaire was used to assess their knowledge of cognitive impairments after stroke. Results: Descriptive statistical analysis of the survey responses revealed that 86% of participants felt knowledgeable about post-stroke cognitive deficits, with the MMSE and MoCA being the most common assessment tools. 83% recognized stroke location as a key factor in cognitive deterioration. 58% of acute stroke unit and 52% of stroke rehabilitation unit respondents reported that up to 40% of their patients showed cognitive decline. 97% agreed on the need for routine cognitive assessments, and 93% emphasized discussing cognitive impacts with patients' families. Additionally, 75% believed physiotherapists play a significant role in managing cognitive deficits. This survey emphasizes the need for physiotherapy interns and postgraduates to understand post-stroke cognitive deficits, improving patient outcomes and rehabilitation. Conclusion: This study shows that most physiotherapy interns and postgraduates are aware of post-stroke cognitive deficits, and the location of the stroke being the most common reason for the cognitive decline with the MMSE and MoCA being the most commonly used assessment tools. However, many patients still experience cognitive decline, highlighting the need for routine evaluations and strong support for involving families and recognizing the role of physiotherapists.
