Abstract
This study investigates the impact of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) interventions on socio-economic development in Murago Wetland, Bugesera District, Rwanda a region facing persistent challenges such as water scarcity, land degradation, and food insecurity. In response, EbA strategies including wetland restoration, sustainable land and water use, agroforestry, and Community-based conservation have been implemented. The research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions in improving environmental conditions and enhancing community livelihoods. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. Quantitative data were gathered from 385 sampled households using structured questionnaires, while key informant interviews and focus group discussions provided qualitative insights. Instrument validity was confirmed through expert review and pre-testing, achieving a content validity index of 80.87%. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20, with both descriptive and inferential statistical methods applied. Findings revealed that EbA interventions significantly contributed to improvements in the wetland ecosystem, including increased water retention, vegetation recovery, and enhanced biodiversity. At the socio-economic level, communities reported increased agricultural productivity, improved soil fertility, greater access to water for irrigation, and higher household income. Employment opportunities also expanded, particularly through sustainable land management and community-led conservation initiatives. However, challenges remain, including limited irrigation infrastructure, uneven benefit distribution, and a need for continuous capacity building and community engagement. Overall, the results demonstrate that EbA can be an effective strategy for promoting both environmental sustainability and socio-economic development. The study supports national policy directions on sustainable land use and climate resilience, and recommends enhanced investment in supportive infrastructure, inclusive participation, and robust monitoring frameworks to sustain and scale up EbA practices across Rwanda.
