Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, accounting for more than 1.8 million fatalities each year. A major challenge in treating lung cancer effectively is the difficulty in detecting it at an early stage, where treatment is more likely to succeed. Traditional diagnostic methods such as X-rays, CT scans, biopsies, and sputum cytology, although effective, often result in late detection due to their dependency on human expertise and the subtle nature of early-stage symptoms. To address this issue, the integration of machine learning (ML) techniques into the medical diagnostic process has emerged as a powerful and promising solution.Machine learning offers the ability to automatically analyze large volumes of complex data, including medical images and patient records, to uncover hidden patterns and markers of disease. Advanced algorithms like Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forests, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Deep Learning models such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are being extensively used for lung nodule detection, classification, and segmentation. These models are trained on annotated datasets like LIDC-IDRI and NLST, enabling them to differentiate between benign and malignant lung nodules with high accuracy. A typical ML pipeline for lung cancer detection includes preprocessing of CT or X-ray images, feature extraction (such as size, shape, and texture of nodules), and classification using supervised learning techniques. CNNs have particularly shown excellent performance in identifying lung tumors from imaging data due to their ability to learn spatial hierarchies and extract relevant features automatically.
