Abstract

Abstract Background of the Study The rapid increase in smartphone usage among college students has raised concerns about its potential health implications, particularly in relation to cardiac health. Prolonged smartphone use has been associated with various health risks, such as poor sleep quality, increased stress, and cardiovascular issues. With these concerns, it is essential to investigate whether there is an association between extensive smartphone usage and cardiac health hazards. Objectives of the Present Study The primary objective of this study was to assess the potential association between smartphone usage and cardiac health hazards among college students at a selected college in Mangalore. Specifically, the study aimed to examine the correlation between the duration of smartphone use and key cardiac health hazards, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and sleep duration. Additionally, the study explored the prevalence of smartphone usage and it’s related symptoms such as headaches and palpitations, among the students. Method This descriptive correlational study was conducted among 324 college students from a selected college in Mangalore. The study was carried out in two phases: the initial phase involved screening all participants for their smartphone usage, identifying those who used their smartphones for more than 4 hours daily. In the second phase, a purposive sampling method was employed to select 72 high smartphone users for further assessment. Data collection included measuring systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and sleep duration, as well as administering a self-reported questionnaire on smartphone usage habits and associated health symptoms. Result Interpretation The study found a weak negative correlation between the duration of smartphone usage and systolic blood pressure (r = -0.086, p = 0.474) as well as diastolic blood pressure (r = -0.100, p = 0.401). Additionally, a weak positive correlation was observed between smartphone usage and heart rate l(r = 0.013, p = 0.914). These correlations were not statistically significant, indicating that the observed associations might be due to chance rather than a meaningful relationship. Despite the lack of significant correlations, the study revealed that a substantial proportion of students reported symptoms potentially related to smartphone overuse, with 68.1% experiencing headaches and 20.8% reporting palpitations. Moreover, 33.3% of the students had an average sleep duration of 7-8 hours per night, and 43.1% rarely engaged in physical exercise. Interpretation and Conclusion Although no strong correlation was established between smartphone usage and cardiac health indicators such as blood pressure and heart rate, the findings underscore the importance of addressing the broader health implications of extensive smartphone use among college students. These results highlight the need for healthcare professionals, especially nurses, to educate students about the potential health risks associated with prolonged smartphone use and to promote balanced technology usage and healthier lifestyle habits. Furthermore, the study emphasises the necessity of integrating content on the health impacts of technology into nursing education curricula to better prepare future healthcare providers. Future research should aim to explore the association between smartphone usage and cardiac health hazards, utilising larger, more diverse samples and longitudinal study designs to better understand the long-term effects of smartphone usage on various health outcomes, including mental and musculoskeletal health.
