Abstract
Title: Prevalence of Fall Risk Among Elderly Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment. Introduction: Fall is defined as "an unintentional loss of balance that leads to failure of postural stability"' or "a sudden and unexpected change in position which usually results in landing on the floor." Cognitive impairment refers to difficulties with mental abilities such as memory, attention, language, and problem-solving. These challenges can range from mild to severe, affecting daily activities and quality of life. (3). Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is diagnosed when there is impairment in one or more cognitive domains, but the criteria for dementia are not met. (3) As people increase in age beyond 65 years, falling increases in frequency and can result in catastrophic loss of function. Another study indicated that 30% of adults older than age 65 years and 40% older than age 75 years fall each year. Approximately 30% of community-living older adults in developed countries fall per year, with 10% to 20% falling more than once. Methods: Present study is a cross sectional analytical study. In this study 162 elderly individuals between the age of 65-75 years without any neurological problems like Parkinson’s Disease, Stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, diabetic neuropathy. Any sensory impairments like Blindness and Deafness, Participant with psychiatric conditions like active Psychosis, Severe Depression, and Severe Anxiety and Orthopaedic conditions like Recent fracture, Arthritis etc were excluded. Cognitive impairment was assessed using Mini Mental State Examination score. Participant scored between 24-27 were selected for the study. Then their Fall Risk was assessed by Fall Efficacy Scale. Statistical Analysis: Prevalence of Fall Risk was calculated using the Fall Efficacy Scale score. The collected data were entered in Microsoft Excel and statistically analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. A Probability value < 0.001 was accepted as the of statistical significance. Result: The prevalence of high fall risk among the participants was found to be 55.56%, indicating that more than half of the elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment were at an increased risk of falling. Conclusion: Despite of some limitations of study, the present study identified 55.56% prevalence of fall risk among elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment, indicating a substantial proportion of this population is vulnerable to falls. The findings suggest that cognitive decline is closely associated with decreased confidence and increased fall susceptibility in older adults.
