Low back pain (LBP) is a major public health issue and a frequent cause of discomfort, disability, and reduced work performance. It is commonly classified into acute (less than 6 weeks), sub-acute (6–12 weeks), and chronic (12 weeks or more). In Andhra Pradesh (2015), the prevalence of LBP ranged from 40.8% to 9.5% among men and 45.4% to 7.8% among women, indicating a considerable burden among working populations such as staff nurses. This study aimed to assess body mechanics among staff nurses with LBP, evaluate the effectiveness of a comprehensive body-mechanics program, and identify associations between its effectiveness and selected sociodemographic variables. The hypotheses tested whether significant differences existed in LBP after the intervention and whether outcomes were associated with demographic factors. Following institutional approval, data collection was conducted from 8-02-2019 to 8-03-2019 at NMCH. Sixty staff nurses were selected through simple random sampling. LBP was measured using the standardized Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Index. Each participant received a comprehensive body-mechanics intervention lasting 30 minutes. Results showed a marked reduction in LBP scores. The mean pre-test score was 43.6 (SD 5.68), which decreased to 24.9 (SD 3.83) post-intervention. The paired t-test value (t = 37.205) exceeded the table value (2.00), leading to rejection of the null hypothesis and confirming a statistically significant effect of the intervention. In conclusion, the comprehensive body-mechanics program significantly reduced LBP among staff nurses. These findings support integrating body-mechanics training into nursing practice as an evidence-based strategy to reduce work-related LBP.
