Balloon vine Oil It is a type of herbal oil made from the plant balloon vine. It is commonly known as Mudakathan. Balloon Vine oil is prepared by heating crushed fresh leaves of Cardiospermum halicacabum in coconut oil over low flame until the leaves turn dark brown and the oil becomes greenish. After cooling, the oil is filtered and stored in a clean, dry bottle for external application on painful joints. Balloon vine oil Application 10 ml of balloon vine oil is applied to the painful knees for 10- 15 minutes twice a day for the period of 15 days. Knee Pain Knee pain refers to the level of discomfort or pain experienced in the knee joint by postmenopausal women, as measured by a standardized pain assessment scale (such as the Numerical Pain Rating Scale) with scores ranging from 0 (no pain) to 10 (worst possible pain). Menopausal Women It refers to women who attained menopause from age group between 45 to 60 years.
Abstract
Introduction: Menopause is a natural physiological transition occurring in women between the ages of 45 and 60 years. Due to hormonal changes, particularly the reduction in estrogen levels, many menopausal women experience musculoskeletal problems such as knee pain, which affects their mobility and quality of life. Non-pharmacological and herbal therapies are increasingly used as safe and economical methods for pain management. Balloon vine oil prepared from Cardiospermum halicacabum has traditional anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that may help reduce joint pain. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of balloon vine oil application on the reduction of knee pain among menopausal women in a selected community area at Coimbatore. Methods: A quantitative research approach with a quasi-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test research design was adopted. The study was conducted at Vilankurichi, Coimbatore. The sample consisted of 30 menopausal women aged 45–60 years who were experiencing knee pain. Participants were selected using a non-probability purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire for demographic variables and a Numerical Pain Rating Scale (0–10) to assess the severity of knee pain. After the pre-test assessment, 10 ml of balloon vine oil was applied to the affected knee joints for 10–15 minutes twice daily for 15 days. A post-test assessment was conducted using the same pain scale after the intervention. Results: The results showed that the majority of menopausal women had moderate to severe knee pain during the pre-test. The mean pre-test pain score was 6.73 ± 1.21, whereas the mean post-test pain score decreased to 3.12 ± 1.04 after the intervention. The calculated paired t value was 12.45, which was statistically significant at p < 0.05. This finding indicates that balloon vine oil application significantly reduced the level of knee pain among menopausal women. Conclusion: The study concluded that balloon vine oil application is an effective, safe, economical, and non-invasive complementary therapy for reducing knee pain among menopausal women. The findings suggest that community health nurses can promote the use of herbal interventions such as balloon vine oil to improve comfort, mobility, and quality of life among menopausal women.
