Abstract
Aim -The present study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) regarding biomedical waste management among interns and second-year medical students in a tertiary care rural hospital and medical college. Methodology - A cross-sectional survey was conducted between August and September 2022 among 200 participants, including interns and second-year medical students, with 100 participants from each group. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing demographic variables and KAP related to BMW management. A total of 186 complete responses were analyzed using percentages and chi-square tests in IBM SPSS version 23.0, with p-values <0.05 considered statistically significant. Results - The study findings revealed that interns demonstrated significantly better knowledge regarding biomedical waste management compared to second-year medical students. Knowledge regarding color-coded waste segregation was observed among 89.6% of interns and 56.2% of second-year students. Awareness about diseases transmitted through BMW, disposal steps, and biohazard symbols was also significantly higher among interns (p<0.05). Attitude and practice scores regarding BMW management were generally favorable in both groups, though no statistically significant difference was observed in these domains. Most participants recognized biomedical waste as hazardous and acknowledged the importance of segregation, disinfection, and the use of personal protective equipment. Conclusion - The study concludes that although interns possess better knowledge and a positive attitude toward BMW management, gaps still exist in practical implementation. Regular training programs, reinforcement of biomedical waste management guidelines, and continuous monitoring are necessary to improve compliance and reduce health and environmental hazards associated with biomedical waste.
