Abstract
Lashing and fixation of the freight container in its place is another critical requirement for ensuring the integrity of structure and prevention of any loss in cargo transport through marine shipping. The conventional practice of container lashing is predominantly a function of static analysis as dictated by international regulations, which consistently underestimate the dynamic forces generated due to the aggressive motion of ship, wave loading, and resonances. The shortcomings in such a design approach have been proven through the unfortunate occurrence of massive losses of cargo containers. In this regard, an innovative cell guide system is proposed for clearance-induced amplification reduction. By implementing a customized structural steel guide rail (20mm x 250 mm cross-section, 3 mm thickness, 50mm extrude), the system physically constrains the horizontal degrees of freedom of the container stack. Comparative structural evaluations were conducted utilizing a scaled Froude model and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in ANSYS Workbench (Transient Structural module). The numerical results highlighted by a peak dynamic lashing force reduction of 61.1% under extreme lateral acceleration were strictly validated against analytical mathematical formulations incorporating a critical 60-degree installation angle. By calculating the exact percentage of difference between the analytical formulation and the FEA results across multiple tiers, the convergence of the computational model is confirmed. The results demonstrate that the novel cell guide significantly improves load distribution, restricts dynamic amplification, and minimizes normal stress responses, offering enhanced fatigue life and stack stability over traditional rod-and-twist lock configurations.
