Abstract

Background Adolescence is a crucial stage of human development marked by rapid physical, psychological, emotional, and social changes, making young people highly vulnerable to mental health problems and suicidal behavior. Suicide remains a leading cause of death among adolescents globally. Since teachers spend a significant amount of time with students, improving their mental health literacy is essential for early identification and timely intervention. Objectives 1. To assess the existing knowledge regarding the early detection and management of suicidal behavior in adolescence among high school teachers. 2. To develop, validate, and administer a Self-Instructional Module (SIM) on the early detection and management of adolescent suicidal behavior. 3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the SIM among school teachers. 4. To identify the statistical association between the pre-test knowledge scores and selected baseline socio-demographic variables. Methodology An evaluative, quasi-experimental research design (pre-test, intervention, and post-test) was conducted among 50 high school teachers selected via simple random sampling from private, urban high schools in Hassan district. Baseline knowledge was evaluated using a validated 40-item structured knowledge questionnaire. Following the pre-test, the structured SIM was administered. A post-test was carried out 7 days later using the identical questionnaire tool. Data were compiled and analyzed utilizing both descriptive and inferential statistics (paired t-test and Chi-square test). Results • Pre-test Baseline: The majority of the respondents (68%) initially demonstrated inadequate knowledge levels , with a baseline overall mean score of 17.62 (44.1%). • Post-test Improvement: After the SIM implementation, the overall mean knowledge score expanded significantly to 32.34 (80.9%) , with 64% of participants achieving an adequate knowledge tier and 0% remaining in the inadequate tier. • Statistical Significance: The knowledge enhancement mean of 36.8% was proved highly significant by a paired t-test value of 21.33 (P < 0.05) , validating hypothesis H1. • Demographic Associations: Chi-square analysis demonstrated that baseline knowledge thresholds were significantly associated (P < 0.05) with the teachers' sex (chi-square = 4.06), marital status (chi-square = 4.50), educational status (chi-square = 5.22), years of professional experience (chi-square = 7.75), and previous source of information (chi-square = 12.73) , supporting hypothesis H2. Conclusion The study concludes that the existing baseline knowledge of secondary school teachers regarding adolescent suicide prevention was structurally limited. The Self-Instructional Module emerged as an exceptionally effective, statistically viable, and reliable instructional tool to bridge information deficits, dramatically elevating educator capacity. Implementing standardized independent learning modules across school boards is strongly recommended to establish an early gatekeeper surveillance framework within educational settings.
