Abstract
The agriculture industry provides food and economic stability for the entire world population. Nevertheless, crop diseases still pose serious problems, resulting in considerable economic losses and decreasing crop yields. Therefore, timely and precise identification of the diseases becomes critical in minimizing their consequences. The conventional method used in detecting crop diseases is based on manual examination of crops, which requires extensive labor input, is not always precise, and depends heavily on the experts' knowledge. Such features make this approach impractical for modern farming.The present research introduces an innovative IoT-based approach for automated identification of crop diseases through image processing and CNNs. Within this system, sensors and smart cameras can be installed in crop fields to take and send photos of the crop leaves to the processing unit. Further, images are subjected to the preprocessing stage to reduce noise and normalize size and color values. The preprocessed images are further used by applying a CNN-based model, that is, automatic extraction of important attributes such as color changes, textures, disease-related characteristics, and more. Further, the proposed model is capable of classifying the images into different diseases with great accuracy. In addition to that, state-of-the-art techniques, such as attention mechanism and Grad-CAM, can be utilized for improvement in performance.The suggested system offers real-time monitoring capabilities as well as the results are provided via a user-friendly interface. As a result, the farmers are able to take quick and informed actions. With the reduction in dependency on manual inspection methods, as well as increased accuracy of image classification, the overall agricultural production process becomes much more efficient and productive.
