Abstract: In this study, we seek to understand how television promotes body shaming and fat-shaming by stigmatising body weight. We'll also study how TV programmes employ methods like body shaming to perpetuate the stigma associated with being overweight. In today's culture, viewers are becoming more and more exposed to fat-shaming and body-shaming on television and in movies. In addition to normalising body shaming, its excessive use has fostered it in people's daily lives, encouraging bullying and body shaming. Some popular shows not only make fun of overweight people, but also criticise and abuse them, associate them with wickedness, or use them as twisted jokes or characters. Making improper or disparaging remarks about someone's physical size or form is known as "body shaming." Irrespective of being underweight or having concerns about a specific part of your body, you may still encounter negative comments or "fat shaming." This kind of criticism can be directed at other people or at oneself. You could be harsh on themselves self and feel self-conscious about their appearance or weight. You can even talk negatively to yourself, saying things such as, "I need to quit filling my face with food," or "I feel so big today”. Your relatives, acquaintances, or even unknown individuals may criticize your physical appearance either face-to-face or through online platforms such as social media.
Keywords: stigma, body shame, overweight, underweight, tv shows, fat shaming.
