Abstract: Quality in higher education has become the prime agenda of countries worldwide. Knowledge is at the core of all development efforts in advancing economic and social well being in an emerging nation like India, Higher education is a powerful tool to built knowledge for an information based society. Quality education has become a very important need as well as matter of concern in the last one decade. Quality and excellence should be the vision of every higher educational institution. Acquisition and enhancement of quality is the great challenge faced by almost all higher educational institutions maintaining the momentum of quality consciousness in crucial in colleges. Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), in fact, is conceived as a mechanism to built and ensure a quality culture at the institutional level. Every higher educational institute (HEIS') should have an Internal Quality Assurance system, with appropriate structure and processes, and with enough flexibility to meets the diverse needs of stakeholders. The mechanism of the institutions may be called 'Internal Quality Assurance Cell' (IQAC), which is meant for planning, guidance and monitoring quality assurance and quality enhancement activities of the colleges. The IQAC may channelize and systematize the efforts and measures of an institution towards academic excellence. IQAC is made effective which may serve as a powerful tool for efficient administrations in the institutions. So, effectiveness of IQAC is brought in by setting goal, monitoring and analyzing results by feedback and improving accordingly by modified mechanism. The expected function of the 10AC is the development and application of quality benchmarks i.e. parameters in various activities of the institution. This paper gives a brief review of role of IQAC in improving quality education in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs') and in aiming to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic action to improve the academic and administrative performance of the institution and to promote measures for institutional functioning towards quality enhancement.
