Plants are the natural source of secondary metabolites which play an important role in the defense against microbes and herbivore. Humans use these secondary metabolites in the preparation of different types of medicines because they carry out number of functions like boost of immuno system, protect the body from free radicals, cardiovascular diseases, controlling microbial infectious diseases of humans and other domesticated animals. Hydrogen cyanide or Hydrocyanic acid or Prussic acid is a secondary metabolite produced by number of plants of the World flora. In plants Cyanogenesis is a bio-chemical mechanism to protect themselves from microbies as well as from herbivore. Amygdalin, Dhurrin, Prunasin Linamarin , Lotaustaralin Cardoispermin etc. are the cyanogenic glycosides present in plants. On hydrolysis these glycosides release hydrogen cyanide. In the present study the quantative estimation of hydrogen cyanide in some members of the Asteraceae family have been reported.
