Introduction: India gets 1.5 lakh patients with renal failures every year and majority of them die within five years. Hemodialysis patients had problems in various dimensions of life. These dimensions are stressful factors and they use various strategies to cope with the stressors. Aim: To assess the level of perceived stress and coping strategies among patients receiving hemodialysis for End Stage Renal Disease. Method: Quantitative research approach with Non-experimental descriptive survey design was adopted. 30 Hemodialysis patients were selected using Simple Random Sampling Technique from the dialysis unit of East Coast Hospital, Puducherry. Data were collected using demographic information, Modified Perceived Stress Scale and Brief COPE Scale. Descriptive and Inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: The results showed that 1(3.3%) had low perceived stress, 28(93.3%) had moderately perceived stress and 1(3.3%) had high perceived stress level .The coping level of patients 5(16.7%) had low coping, 23(76.7%) had moderate coping and 2(6.7%) had high coping level. The study revealed that there is a significant association of gender with perceived stress with p value 0.0093, while there is no significant association of coping strategies with any demographic variables. No correlation was found between stressors and coping strategies. Conclusion: Findings of this study can help the nurses to design some interventions to facilitate coping with the stressors in patients.
