Abstract: Soil stabilization is the permanent physical and chemical alteration of soils to enhance their physical properties. Stabilization can increase the shear strength of a soil and control the shrink-swell properties of a soil, thus improving the load-bearing capacity of a sub-grade to support pavements and foundations. Stabilization can be used to treat a wide range of sub-grade materials from expansive clays to granular materials. Stabilization can be achieved with a variety of chemical additives including lime, fly ash, and Portland cement, as well as by-product such as lime-kiln dust and cement-kiln dust. These are the existing technique to improve soil stabilization. This paper presents the details of studies conducted on the possible use of waste plastic for soil stabilization. We think that the addition of plastic strips into the soil will be an innovative technique to improve the shear strength, tensile strength and California bearing ratio (CBR) value of the soil in an economic way. Expansive clay soils are the type of soils whose volume changes with the change in water content. They have a behavior of swelling and shrinking that is a serious hazard to structure built over them. This paper shows the outcomes of an attempt to reinforce and stabilize expansive clay soil with plastic bottle strips. It will be reducing the shrinkage and swelling. Stabilizing expansive clay soils with waste plastic bottles simultaneously solves the challenges of improper plastic waste recycling that is currently a teething problem in most developing countries. The results obtained from this study favorably suggest that inclusion of this material in expansive soils would be effective for ground improvement in geotechnical engineering. Modified Proctor Test is recommended than Standard Proctor Test because the soil which is tested will be used for road construction which requires high compaction.
