There has been an increased interest and challenge in the delivery of an active ingredients through the skin. It is a viable administration route for potent, low molecular weight therapeutic agents susceptible to first pass metabolism. Translabial delivery promises many advantages which include non-invasiveness, prolonged drug level in the blood stream, reduced side effect, improved bioavailability, better patient compliance and easy termination of drug administration. Lovastatin is a Lipid lowering agents drug widely used in treatment of CVS disease. Oral therapy of drug is effective, but the clinical use is often limited because of its serious gastrointestinal side effect such as irritation of the gastrointestinal mucosa. The objective of present study was to investigate the suitability of HPMC and Na-CMC films as a vehicle for translabial delivery of Lovastatin. Films were prepared with different drug polymer ratio by solvent casting technique. The films were evaluated for their physico-chemical characteristics like, thickness, weight, drug content, folding endurance and drug polymer interaction. Preformulation studies such as identification, solubility, melting point, and partition coefficient were carried out. The thickness of films was in the range of 0.194 to 0.362 mm. In vitro release was carried out by using Franz diffusion cell in PBS 6.8. FT-IR and DSC studies showed the absence of drug polymer interactions. The cumulative percent release of drug was inversely proportional to polymer concentration.
