Abstract: This article revisits the traditional motivation theories to see them from a perspective that explains criminal motives. McClelland’s needs, Murray’s psychogenic needs, Maslow’s need hierarchy Alderfer’s ERG model and Optimal Level Theory are examined using real-life criminal cases that took place in India. The concepts of Kohlberg’s moral development, Sutherland’s postulates, and the Frustration-Aggression hypothesis are incorporated into these theories to bridge the gap between the forensic-criminal environment and motivational psychology. In conclusion, we understand how the motive for criminal behaviour is derived from the same sources as the motive for non-criminal behaviour.
