The adult mammalian heart was once believed to be a post-mitotic organ without any capacity for regeneration, but recent findings have challenged this dogma. Zebrafish, is possibly the best characterized with respect to cardiac regenerative responses. Zebrafish – a tiny freshwater fish can efficiently regenerate its damaged heart within a short time period . Zebrafish has a closed cardiovascular system and a cardiac cycle that is highly similar to human cardiovascular physiology. Zebrafish heart regeneration occurs following injury through the dedifferentiation and proliferation of mature cardiomyocytes. Now, scientists at Pune-based Agharkar Research Institute have used this tiny animal model and identified genes cellular communication network factor 2a (ccn2a), previously known as ctgfa, is induced in endocardial cells in the injured tissue and regulates CM proliferation and repopulation of the damaged tissue. that can promote heart regeneration.
