This research paper seeks to analyse the concept of toxic terrorism and environmental disaster in contemporary literature, particularly focusing on Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake. Toxic terrorism is a term that speaks of the utilization of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear products with the intention of causing harm or fear as a political or an ideological statement. This paper aims at discussing these themes according to the concepts of exposure and protection in the given genre of literature and to reveal that even contemporary societies with the emphasis on technologies are defense vulnerable. Thus, the paper provides a comparative analysis of the psychological and material impacts of such catastrophic phenomena on people and communities. The Road stands as an analysis of environmental degradation and how people’s natural instinct of the survival of the species is represented in the movie by a father and son in a desolate world where civilization has been destroyed. The literal features which relate to the way of writing are the simplicity of the language, the contrast of the images, and the hopelessness of the characters. On the other hand, Oryx and Crake portrays a post-apocalyptic world which results from genetic engineering and corporate world – an aspect that raises ethical concerns on presentations in biotechnology. This paper finds that Margaret Atwood also consciously shaped other aspects of the text to depict psychological trauma and moral questions of the survivors. The novel satirizes trends that transform life into commodities and fail to regulate and control the further developments of science by appealing to the need to reconsider the values and principles of scientific activity. Thus, it is possible to state that literature acts as an effective agent in the representation of people, with the enhancement of environmental and public health ethics being one of the main goals. The work emphasizes the relationship between the protection of nature and health, supporting rational management of resources and progress of science. The two novels, by their grisly narratives and deep philosophical overtones, urge the reader to contemplate their roles in preserving the environment and the resultant impact on the successive generations.
