Trends in Energy Intensity across Manufacturing Industries of Indian States

The issue on sustainable growth and development has gained importance across the globe since the middle of 20th century. As the threat of climate change has become a major concern hence the focus on various sustainability programmes has been widely spread. The problem of climate change is mainly caused by GHG emission which is resulted from high usage of non renewable fossil fuels. As per IPCC reports and UNFCCC Climate Change mitigation programs, reduction of energy consumption and emission is an important matter of concern, which has also become an essential requirement for every nation to reduce the GHG emission in order to achieve sustainable growth and development goals.
In an over populous country like India, industrial sector is considered to be the crux of economic growth and development. Besides, Energy resource is a vital input for any industrial activity and the industrial sector is the major energy consumer of any nation. Hence, standing on the crucial juncture of increasing threat of climate change, reduction in energy consumption and emission is an essential requirement without sacrificing the economic growth of our nation. Therefore, this paper seeks to explore the long run trend in energy intensity along with growth of real gross value added, growth of energy consumption and carbon emission over years from 1980-2016 in India at an aggregate level; it also focuses on all the manufacturing industries of the nation and finds out their current status of energy intensity per unit of output. As a result we will be able to explore whether energy efficiency or clean energy techniques are been followed up by India’s industrial sector.
