Macrocyclic ligands frequently exhibit great discrimination for certain metal ions as well as tiny molecules, making them appealing contenders for small scale chemical sensing purposes. Crown ethers are macrocyclic compounds with polyether connections that are frequently divided by an ethylene unit “[O–CH2–CH2–O]”. The lone pairs of oxygen in crown-type macrocycles are oriented inside, the pre organized macrocyclic opening tend to produce complexes in which metals coordinate within the opening. Two NO2S2 macrocycles with affinity for mercury(II) have recently been described, with the latter bound in an exo or endo coordination way. The varied torsion configurations chosen in “X–CH2–CH2–X” atom pattern “(X = O, X = S, anti)” in these compounds result in this coordination behavior. Exo-coordination is appealing from a synthetic standpoint since it would allow for the connection of macrocyclic building pieces in a variety of configurations. This study focuses on current developments in mercury macrocyclic compounds and their physical and chemical characteristics.
