Abstract: RESEARCH ABSTRACT “A STUDY TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VIDEO ASSISTED TEACHING (VAT) ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING VITAMIN‘A, DEFICIENCY AMONG MOTHERS OF UNDER FIVE CHILDREN ATTENDING PEADIATRIC OPD IN A SELECTED HOSPITAL AT MEERUT”. Background of the study:. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) has been recognized as a public-health issue in developing countries and xerophthalmia due to VAD is the leading cause of preventable childhood blindness which presents as night blindness and Bitot’s spots (BS) in early stages followed later by keratomalacia. Children are more prone to VAD due to decreased dietary intake and poor absorption leading to depleted vitamin A (VA) stores in the body. Other contributory factors are a high prevalence of infectious diseases such as measles, diarrhea, and respiratory infections; and economic constraints, sociocultural limitations, and lack of education. Objective: 1. To develop and validate a video assisted teaching regarding Vitamin A deficiency among mothers. 2. To evaluate the level of knowledge before and after administration of video assisted teaching regarding Vitamin A deficiency among mothers attending pediatric OPD . 3. To find out the association between post-test knowledge score regarding Vitamin A deficiency with their selected demographic variables Methods: Data analysis has done using descriptive ( mean, frequency, percentage and standard deviation) and inferential ( Chi square test, paired t-test) statistics. Frequency and percentage distribution also has done to analyze demographic variables. Mean and standard deviation was used to assess the knowledge of mothers attending pediatric OPD. A paired t- test will be used to find the effectiveness of video assisted teaching. Chi-square testwasused to find out the association between the knowledge of the mothers attending pediatric OPD and their selected demographic variables. Result: It is found that most of the mothers belonged to age group of below 20 years. It was observed that most of the subjects were having primary education. In the religion 26(74%) were Hindus, 20(26%) were Christian. It was seen that most of the samples 35(70%) were House wife. It is found that most of the samples 26 (52%) were from joint family. It was found that among samples 10(20%) were having monthly family income of 4001-7000 .With regard to source of information regarding vitamin “A” deficiency 25 ( 50%) samples got information about vitamin A deficiency from Anganwadi workers. It was found that 40(80%) children received immunization at proper time . The overall pre-test knowledge score revealed that 44(88%) had inadequate knowledge and 6(12%)had moderate knowledge. After assessing the pre-test knowledge, video assisted teaching was implemented to the samples. The post-test knowledge score increased to 43(86%) (moderate knowledge) and 7(14%) adequate. The paired ‘t’test value 35.74 was found to be higher than the table value and that it was significant at P<0.05 level, hence it shows that video assisted teaching was effective in improving the knowledge score of mothers regarding vitamin A deficiency. Conclusion: Video assisted teaching on vitamin A deficiency was effective in enhancing the knowledge score on vitamin A deficiency among mothers of under five children.
